Choose your home air purifiers for your needs. No single home air purifier can meet every need. There are home
air purifiers designed for allergy and asthma. Other home air purifiers
are best for odor control and chemical sensitiviy. Tobacco smoke
control requires a larger amount of activated carbon in your home
air purifiers. Here is an overview of health issues where your home air purifiers may be helpful. Allergy and Asthma Relief Airborne particles, chemicals gases and odors may trigger allergies and asthma. Reducing airborne particles and gases reduces your exposure to allergy and asthma triggers. What must an air purifier do to accomplish this??? First, your air purifier must not harm you! Ozone is used by many air purifiers on the market today. The Environmental Protection Agency’s article >“Ozone Generators that are sold as Air Cleaners: Assessment of Effectiveness and Health Consequences” – “When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health" - http://www.airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=static.brochure). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections.” The article suggests using "proven methods of air cleaning". Our air purifiers DO NOT produce harmful levels of ozone. Second, your air purifier must remove airborne particles that may trigger allergies or asthma. Your air purifier should contain a HEPA filter. - HEPA stands for “high-efficiency particulate arresting”. The original HEPA filter was designed in the 1940’s for the Manhattan Project to remove radioactive particles from the air. HEPA filters remove particles as small as .3 micrometers (micron) or larger. One micron is 1/25,000 of an inch. To understand just how small this is, consider that human hairs measure between 30 and 120 microns. Particles can be categorized in three size ranges: • Coarse Particles larger than 0.3 micron The human body has very little defense against very small particles. • Viruses: 0.01 - 0.05 micron Third, your air purifier must contain several pounds of activated carbon. Activated carbon is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open millions of tiny pores between carbon atoms. One pound of activated carbon has a surface area of up to 60 to 100 acres. Activated carbon may absorb up to 60% of its weight in airborne chemicals, odors and gases. Activated carbon is made from several sources, coal, coconut shell, wood or peat moss. In addition, activated carbon can be impregnated with various catalysts to better absorb specific airborne chemicals and odors. Activated carbon is the adsorbent used military gas masks. Activated carbon is the safest, efficient, cost effective way to trap noxious gases and odors. Let's have a conversation about the best air purifier for you.
